Steal this Lesson from Kevin Hart to 10x Your Output

This type of thinking put a man on the moon.

Kevin Hart wants to “shift culture.”

This is a huge statement.

A truly huge idea.

It’s his purpose.

It’s what pulls him forward, day after day, to get shit done.

It’s how he’s able to put in long hours and accomplish incredible tasks.

I couldn’t begin to tell you everything he’s doing, but in a 5-minute stalker scroll online, here’s a few things I found that are on his plate:

  • Promote comedy special, Reality Check ✔️
  • Run plant-based restaurant, Hart House ✔️
  • Manage 2 media companies ✔️
  • Manage wellness company, VitaHustle ✔️
  • Host series Hart to Heart ✔️
  • Host 2 celebrity game shows✔️
  • Promote Gran Coramino Tequila ✔️
  • Producer 11+ new films and TV shows ✔️

Kevin Hart is an absolute B-E-A-S-T and part of this is having an amazing team, an amazing work ethic, and undeniable talent.

But, I would almost guarantee, his purpose is the driving factor underneath all of this output, collaboration, and momentum.

In his interview with John Cena on Hart to Heart, Cena talks about meeting Hart for the first time, and asking the comedian why he was doing so much.

Why he was getting off a plane, conducting a business call, and getting wired for their scene…simultaneously.

His answer, in addition to the fact that he loves it, was to “shift culture.”

For Hart, specifically, this is about shifting the culture for black creatives and black business owners.

This is even more evident in his interview in the same series with Tyler Perry, someone who Hart looks up to like a mentor (Oprah teaches Perry who teaches Hart who teaches anyone who will pay attention).

Here’s Perry’s unique perspective on building a [black] business:

I’m tired of people talking about jobs and diversity. If you want me to stand with you, I’m there, but the truth is, when more of us start to do what I’ve done, [what Kevin Hart has done, what Jay-Z has done], stand up and take the position of ‘how do we build it so we don’t have to be in those positions?’ That’s when the change lasts forever.

After getting turned down meeting after meeting for years, Perry now has his own film studio in Atlanta and a net worth of $1 billion (Hart is sure to catch up in his lifetime, with a current net worth of $450 million).

For these moguls, it’s about leading by example, not requesting change, or answering to gate-keepers. They’re making the change. They’re building empires that overshadow the gates.

(Marvel recently filmed a movie at Tyler Perry Studios.)

There’s a massive amount of societal change in the works, as well there should be. No argument there. But, its truly inspiring to see anyone take small strides that lead to massive results.

I’m just a fan, as I’ve never met or interviewed Hart, but I’m assuming all of this is what Hart means by saying he wants to drive the culture shift (this plus his actions, such as only using black-owned wines and promoting them on his interview series).

Like a rudder on a cruise ship, these creatives want to shift the culture in a way that lasts forever.

This level of purpose, not unlike Kennedy’s speech to put a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s, is a clear goal that requires a flexible approach.

It’s got a result.

It’s got a date.

And it’s going to take a lot of help, but that help will come, as long as they understand the vision.

For me, my purpose is to help creatives get their most ambitious work into the world and lead by example.

Today, I took aim at my purpose by completing the following:

  • Schedule Email ✔️
  • Record 2x Intros ✔️
  • Update Prolific Challenge ✔️
  • Record 2x SOPs for VA ✔️
  • List August Goals ✔️
  • UpWork outreach 4x ✔️
  • Start tomorrow’s post ✔️

Note: this is not a blog, but a continuum of field notes devoted to goals in writing, filmmaking, entrepreneurship, health, fatherhood and husbandhood. Checklists represent actionable steps and daily accountability.

When you know exactly where you’re headed, even if you don’t know every step of the way (which you never will), every decision is actually binary.

Will [insert next task] lead me to my goal or away from my goal?

Yes, do it.

No, skip it.

That’s the power of purpose.

It’s your Future Self pulling you forward, decision by decision, regardless of your past or current situation.

What is your purpose and what are you doing today — right now, not tomorrow — to accomplish it?
